History of PARC-EXTENSION

Parc-Extension is located in the Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension.

The boundaries of this area are as follows: bounded on the north by the Crémazie, south by the Jean-Talon Street to the west by the Acadie Boulevard and on the east by Avenue Casgrain.

Parc-Extension is the most densely populated neighborhood of Montreal. It contains 18,802 inhabitants per km ² compared with 3,625 people per km ² in Montreal. A total of 31 399 people representing a hundred different ethnic groups live in this quadrilateral 1.6 square kilometer. With 62 % of its population born outside Canada, first Parc-Extension is associated with multi-ethnicity and multiculturalism. It also counts forty mother tongues other than French or English.

In 1876, the Canadian Pacific Railway built the brand which today is part of the neighborhood.

The coming of the streetcar encourages speculators to buy land for farmers to convert in batches. Thus in 1907 the Park Realty company of Montreal bought three lots were named Park Avenue Extension, where originally the name of the neighborhood.

The year 1910 will be marked by the annexation to the City of Montreal part of the parish of Saint- Laurent ( the current district of Parc-Extension ) , along with the City of Côte-des-Neiges , City Emard , the town of Notre -Dame- de-Grâce , Ahuntsic village and the village of Bordeaux.

The construction of the Park Avenue Station or Jean -Talon station in the early 1930s gradually transform the composition of the neighborhood. The arrival of the train will make many small industries to settle close to the train station to facilitate the sending and receiving of goods.

During the same period (1930), Parc-Extension is a neighborhood home to European immigrants. The late 60s and early 70s were marked by the arrival of several communities of different origins, but especially that from Greece. In the late 1970s, the ethnocultural composition of the neighborhood is diversifying with the arrival of a new wave of immigration from both the Caribbean, Central America, South Asia and South- East.

Since the 1990s, Parc-Extension continues to diversify and has now, according to the latest Statistics Canada census, hundreds of groups from all cultural communities and forty native languages other than French and English. Immigrants account for 58% of the district population, yet they constitute 31% of the population in Montreal.

In 1987, the Metro Park began its operations in 1997 when Jean -Talon station reopened after being closed for 15 years. It will change its name in 2000 to Park Station.

The prospect of transforming the yard as an extension of Outremont campus of the University of Montreal brings new perspectives for this sector sometimes forgotten by the city center.
